Newlands Nursery was founded off the back of tomatoes. Well, kind of… Just after the Second World War, Doug Lodge returned from the Far East (where he had served as a “Desert Rat”) to work in his family business which was a greengrocer’s in Chelmsford, Essex. It did not take long for Doug and Win (his wife) to figure out that getting hold of fruit and vegetables was going to be tricky. So that’s when they bought the land that Newlands Nursery now sits on. Win’s family had been in horticulture as far back as the mid-1800s, so the skills were there. And one of the first crops they grew were tomatoes – not to sell the plants (that would come later), but for the fruit. To this day we grow tomatoes at Newlands Nursery, and we are very excited to share some of our favourite varieties with you in the Dug Box.
